Walking Wednesdays!

September 3, 10, 17 & 24, October 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29

Change Your Way. Walk UA!

Why walk?
• Physical activity
• Teach safe walking skills to children
• Awareness of how walkable our community is and where improvements can be made
• Concern for the environment
• Reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools
• Sharing time with community parents and children
• **Earn a PJ Day! (see below for details)**

How do I participate in Walking Wednesdays?

You can meet at one of the four designated locations (on the back of this flyer) at the specified time, or join a group en route, or walk to school with your family. Or hop on your bike or scooter!

Bus rider? No problem! Have a parent take you to one of the four route starting points.

Our parent captains will escort you and your classmates safely to Windermere.

Receive a punch on your passport for each Wednesday you walk to school. (Passports will be distributed to each class on or before 9/2.)

Need more incentive? There are 9 "Walking Wednesdays" this fall. Every student who earns at least 6 punches on his/her passport will be rewarded with a **PAJAMA DAY!!** What could be better on a chilly day than coming to school in your comfy PJ's, slippers and robe? Walk your way to a PJ Day!!

Parents: After walking to Windermere on 9/3 and 10/1, please join us in front of the school to chat, have a cup of coffee, & grab a bite to eat. Walking Wednesdays are great for the whole community!!

Hawk Walk - Week of October 6, 2014

"Hawk Walk" is a fun and fit activity for Kindergartens through Fifth-graders. Students will walk with their classmates during their regularly scheduled PE class during the week of October 6th. Each student will receive a Hawk Walk water bottle for participating.

Hawk Walk will serve as the PTO's major fall fundraiser,in lieu of "Annual Family Contribution" this year. Our goal is to raise at least $30 per student, or, for those with multiple families students at Windermere, $50/family. We hope that each family will participate in the Hawk Walk to the best of their ability and we would like to thank you in advance for your participation!

Guidelines:

  1. Students may start collecting pledges as soon as they receive the pledge sheets. Reminder: White and Yellow copies of pledge sheets need to be brought to the student's classroom by Monday, October 6th.

  2. Pledges may be made by anyone. However, only ask friends, family members and close neighbors. Do not go door-to-door or ask anyone you do not know. (Please do not ask for pledges from any of the staff members of Windermere.)

  3. Each sponsor making a pledge should write his/her own name, address or phone number, and pledge per lap or flat rate. Students may collect the flat rate pledges in advance and turn these in with the white and yellow copy of their pledge form.

  4. Each class will walk during one of their regularly scheduled physical education classes. Each participation will be issued a "lap card", which will be marked each time the student reaches the starting point, thereby keeping track of the number of laps completed. If it rains on the day of the Hawk Walk, alternate arrangements have been made to walk inside the building with the least amount of disruption to classrooms.

  5. Upon completion of the Hawk Walk, students will had in their lap cards. A volunteer will record each student's lap total on their pledge sheet and return it to the students. Students may then collect outstanding pledges. Please return checks or money to Windermere PTO by Monday, October 24th.

  6. Students must walk the course themselves. Handicapped students are allowed special considerations for walking laps during the Hawk Walk. No running or jogging will be allowed. Participations are encouraged to wear hats and sunscreen if it's sunny. We want every child to enjoy the day.

'Box Top for Education' Classroom Contest: October 13 - 17

The students will receive a Ziploc baggie with their name on it. The students will place all of the General Mill's BOX TOPS their family has collected into the baggie and return it to their classroom teacher during the promotional dates of October 13-17.  The classroom that collects the most BOX TOPS will win something special. In the past, the class won an extra recess and a snack of the very popular Market Day Bosco Cheesy Breadsticks!

Fall Family Fun Night

It was GREAT to see so many of our families Friday night at the annual PTO Fall Family Night! What a wonderful Windermere tradition. There was so much for the kids to do all evening, and can't thank our amazing PTO volunteers enough for their time, dedication and efforts for all that they do to put this community event together. The weather was perfect and what a great kick off for the season. Thank you to Crisi Acker and her co-chairs, Andra Gillum, Monica Moyer, Colleen O'Hara, Carol Allaire, and Michelle Hughes.

In addition, a special thanks to Jen Plahuta for another AMAZING book fair!!!
